World Book Day – Kids Books and Bookshelves

As Roald Dahl once wrote, “If you are going to get anywhere in life you have to read a lot of books.” But with invasion of tablets, mobiles, laptops and TVs packed with shows, apps and interactive games, books can often fall by the wayside for today’s kids. If you are one of those parents who try hard to get your little ones into the habit of reading those wonderful kids books written by amazing authors here is a day to start that habit.

World Book Day is approaching! It’s a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and most importantly it’s a celebration of reading. It’s designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world. It is celebrated on the first Thursday of March every year and this year would be the 20th year of this celebration.  In some other countries World Book Day is celebrated on April 23rd which is William Shakespeare’s birthday.

The main aim of World Book Day is to provide an opportunity for children of all ages to come together to appreciate reading. Kids need to explore the pleasures of books and reading which can happen only when they develop the habit of reading and loving books. School is the best place for children to get into reading but they often associate school with forced reading. Having a small library of their own at home is recommended for kids of any age. They need to have the pleasure of owning the books and the responsibility of taking care of them. Evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who don’t, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures.
Schools normally celebrate World Book Day with events like asking children to up as their favourite character from a book or having a storytelling or book reading session by authors.

Just as all the other furniture in your kids room, the bookshelf also has to be a kid-friendly bookshelf. With younger children it is important that the bookshelves are half-size (i.e. 3 to 4 feet tall). It is also important that kids storage and bookshelves have a sturdy base and they lay low to the ground to prevent any flip-overs. It is good to have it all in their reach so that they do not hurt themselves trying to reach for things at the top.
